Early Warning System Notifications Report 2023

GMP+ International received 10% more Early Warning System (EWS) notifications in 2023 compared to 2022. This increase may be attributed to heightened awareness of feed safety in the global market.

Notifications came from 28 countries, with 5 new countries submitting for the first time. This consistency underscores the continued focus on the EWS worldwide. Click here to view the infographic.

Key findings

Most notifications were related to feed materials, with the top three most notified products being:

  1. Whey
  2. Distillers grains and solubles, dried
  3. Soya (bean) expeller

Factors like humidity and storage conditions make these products particularly at risk of contamination, requiring careful handling during production and storage to ensure safety.

Most notified hazards

  1. Salmonella: 71 occurrences
  2. Pesticides/Insecticides: 62 occurrences

Highlights

  • Pesticides/Insecticides: There was a 63% increase in contamination cases (62 incidents in 2023 compared to 38 in 2022).
  • Heavy metals: Contamination cases decreased by 41% (39 incidents in 2022 compared to 23 in 2023).
  • Other hazard levels remained comparable to 2022.

Control measures and recommendations

The notifications indicate that companies effectively managed incidents, ensuring customers were informed, products were blocked and measures were implemented to prevent recurrences. No warnings were issued in 2023. Nevertheless, awareness remains critical. Any irregularities in feed safety should be addressed promptly to maintain the highest standards.
